hacklab for art and open source

Liwoli 2009 is a three day long Hacklab and an open invitation to all
who would like to discover more about and participate in an active
process of learning, producing and sharing around the areas of
Free/Libre Open Source Software. FLOSS-developers, artists and
programmers such as the collective GOTO10 or activists from HAIP (Hack
Act Interact Progress) and many others form the basis for the event and
share their knowledge in the form of workshops, hacklabs, presentations,
installations and performances.

We find the active process of learning, producing and sharing in the
Open Source community, an obviously successful method, incredibly
interesting, in particular because it is a strong opposition to the
usual behaviour in arts and media.
For the event we are calling for contributions in the form of
presentations, workshops and performances around the themes of Free and
Open Source Software. This invitation is not only for those who are
interested in “Do It Yourself” and how it interrelates with the current
creative production practices - a theme currently (largely) ignored in
the (Arts) University education program. The invitation is also directed
to those who are interested in the cultural importance of FLOSS.

Open Source Tools

Workshops and lectures about FLOSS tools to make art. The expected
audience are art students, artists and media workers. Workshops and
lectures shall wxplain, promote and discuss FLOSS tools.

Art against Freedom
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Is Free Software and Open Source compatible to the self image of art and
artists? FLOSS is about sharing tools and knowledge. This is rarely
taken into consideration in artistic environments, where cultural
ownership is paramount. On the other hand the arts are essentially
self-referential in many ways, constantly reacting to and building upon
past work of others. Where are the parallels, where are the contradictions?

Cracking vs. Hacking
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Using cracked software is a wide-spread among artists, creatives and
media-activists. The industry partly tolerates this in order not too
lose future customers, or even to get the practitioners “addicted” to
their wares. Another part of the community “hacks” its own programs
putting together what they actually need. So programs emerge, which are
often equal and sometimes even better in complexity and usability than
their closed source counterparts. Contributions for this section could
deal with this situation in many ways.

State of the Art

Here it is interesting to hear about experiences in FLOSS projects, the
interaction of tool building and tool using, models for living from this
mode of operation. In particular the use of FLOSS tools in the
production of art, culture and media, especially in the university
context. It is also of interest, what experiences have been made with
active participation in FLOSS projects.

Hack the artist

With the artists' penchant for re-using, misusing and reinterpreting
everything, it might be said that their principle modus operandi is to
hack the world and themselves. Entertaining Contributions with and a
strong sense of humor around topics like: the end of art, Plagiarism,
Copyright/Copyfight, World improvement, …
